I’ve decided to respect your opinion, but strongly disagree with it.

Nothing about wearing this makeup was mocking, degrading, oppressive, or ignorant. I didn’t paint my face like a sugar skull and walk around telling people I was dressed as a mexican, I was celebrating the imagery about death…

I don’t have the energy to address this today. Tumblr friends? How about I adopt the culture of “Go fuck yourself” I think I love and appreciate all parts of it and would really like to rub it in your face.

Okay, too bitter to actually aim for educating babosas today.

There’s a HUGE difference in parading around like an ignorant jackass in blackface & actually taking the consideration to approach a cultural practice knowledgeably and respectfully. So, pouting and adopting a “OMFG, YOU’RE NOT MEXICAN SO YOU COULDN’T POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND” mentality isn’t preserving your culture’s pride or anything—it’s just making you look like an intolerant dick bent on exclusivity. You have a beautiful culture and you should be honored that others can recognize (and appreciate) that.

If you don’t want me to decide what this OP knows and thinks, then sure the fuck don’t put the words ““OMFG, YOU’RE NOT MEXICAN SO YOU COULDN’T POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND”” into my mouth.

But while you point it out. You are not mexican. Do not appropriate my culture. Do not claim that loving it gives you the right to steal it. Do not assume that your positive feelings ever equate to reciprocal positive feelings or permission from those you are appropriating. You are not a member of the oppressed/marginalized group from which you are stealing/appropriate and thus you will never understand. Now you can quote me.

I know I have beautiful culture and that’s why I am trying to PRESERVE it and not dilute it by complacently watching as it becomes white washed,  commodified, commercialized, and decontextualized.

But obviously having people from the culture that you wish to adopt or support adopting tell you not to or that it is part of painful process of colonialism and oppression means nothing to you.

Oh, goodness. You’re going to go on with this, aren’t you?

You’re absolutely right. I’m not Mexican. Yet, I have no interest in “appropriating” your culture. I respect your opinion and from now on I’ll make sure to “steal/appropriate” from my own oppressed & marginalized group. Lesson learned. Kudos to you.

My (new) Halloween costume, folks:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

YOU PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ME OR BELLYFULLOFWINE! OH THE IRONY!! HASJSFKHDSFIJHESKJFRHEKFRHSGF

I really wish that you had taken some of this to heart. Instead you once again try to justify why this is okay.

Let me say it like this. If you go out on Halloween like this, if you receive accolades for your great outfit, if you feel righteously vindicated: know that for that single night, for the feeling of superiority you appear to hace in still choosing to wear my culture as a costume, you are blatantly and PURPOSEFULLY hurting people. If you are able to separate yourself from your martyrdom, ask yourself if you want to be know as someone who learned when challenged or systematically contributed to oppression.

And fyi, here is a white guy (maybe you can handle listening to him instead of little mexican me) telling you like it is: Myth of reverse racism and An Open Letter to the White Right, On the Occasion of Your Recent, Successful Temper Tantrum.

I’ve gone above and beyond the required to give you resources. So use and get off your imperial high horse.
